Rob Foster - Guide Profile
Darwin's Barra Base

I've been fishing all my life, trying to catch as many species as possible. For the last 30 years moving around Australia and Papua New Guinea looking for the best fishing available.

I was ranked high in both National and state fishing titles for rock and beach/ estuary in the early 80's before going professional, working on prawn trawlers and hand lining bream, jew, snapper etc.

Being a Fitter/ Machinist I settled down for a couple of years in Lismore and started a small engineering firm which eventually was lost to the "Recession we had to have", during this time was Champion Angler for the Lismore Angling Club 88,89 & 90.

Moved with my Wife and kids to Papua New Guinea in 91 to run a large engineering workshop in Port Moresby and soon met local fisho Merv Penny, As skipper of Merv's 28' Bertram, we won many game fish titles before sending the boat to Rabaul to charter for BP Execs and other clients wishing to experience these fish rich waters. Based in Port Moresby allowed me to experience the wonderful Barra and Black bass fishing in the Gally Reach Delta. Moved to Lae mid 90's to spend 3 wonderful years fishing the Huon Gulf for marlin, Sailfish, xos yellowfin tuna and Mackerel, Known to the locals in Lae as Mack Man for my love of catching mackerel. Took up a position of Marina Manager in Bootless Bay for the Loloata Island Resort. Skipper of the passenger ferry to the island and dive/game fishing charters for the Islands clients kept me busy til 2000.

Back in Australia I started taking extended trips to places like Frazer Islands Rooney Point, Lake Monduran, Lake Awoonga and many eastern ports chasing the fish with family and friends. Having fished the Northern Territory in the 80's and spent so long in PNG we couldn't adjust to the cold climates and moved to Darwin in 2012 where I have linked up with Allan Beale at the Darwin Barra Base to Guide these wonderful waterways and put clients onto the fishing experience of a lifetime.
