Biggest Saltwater Barramundi

There was talk this year about who caught the biggest saltwater barramundi this decade in Top End waters.

Allan Beale of Darwin's Barra Base says his customers landed some of the biggest Top End fish, and he has the photographs to prove it.

Allan said:?I know there have been claims in a magazine about a 131cm barra being the biggest landed this century, but the 140cm barra landed by Brett Torosi, guided by mark Parkinson when he worked with Darwin's Barra Base in 2007, is the biggest I know of.?

?The other largest barra landed in 2007 was a 129cm fish hooked and landed 100m up Marsh Creek by Danny Kelf, guided by myself. In 2006 I landed a 137cm barrra with Brett Cody, in pouring rain where digital cameras should not be opened up, and I stuffed my $600 camera trying. So no photo proof of that one.?

?In March 2008, our largest fish was a 131cm barra landed by Claire Mathias, guided by myself and Tony Lebrun. In March 2009 the biggest fish was 126cm, by Darren Cade, guided by Tony Lebrun.?

Allan puts customers onto the big fish near Shady Camp, but he also targets large numbers of smaller fish at other venues.

He says the Finniss River barrra fishing from mid-April to October, on the right tides can be awesome fishing with cricket scores of barra landed and released. ?Barramundi above a metre are not uncommon even during the cooler months, best during the neap tides. With the new net closure lines in place in Fog Bay the fishing should be even better for the fishfindermaps@gmail.comremainder of the year.? he said.

?During mid May and June, large numbers of sailfish have been congregating in the waters wide of Fog Bay, and North Peron Island. When they're on, anglers can expect to see schools of up to five or six right up to late September, with some days a total of 30-40 'free-swimmers' spotted. ?Their hunting technique can often be witnessed as they circle bait schools, herding them to the surface and gently slurping them down. At these moments, a skilled angler can cast a live or dead bait towards the fish for an instant hookup.
?Other species that will show are spanish mackeral, giant trevally Gts, tuna, cobia and marlin.?
