131cm Shady Camp Barra caught by Claire Mathias from Tasmania fishing with Darwins Barra Base could be a record for 2008

10 March 2008
THE fisho challenge set by the recent landing of a 128cm barramundi has been answered with the cry: "Ours is bigger than yours!''
This 131cm "Goliath'' was caught at the mouth of the Mary River system near South Alligator River in Arnhem Land.
The scales couldn't take the fish's weight.
Darwin's Barra Base Fishing Safaris guide Tony Le Brun said the ``barra lady'' weighed about 28.5kg.
"The scales we use only go to 27kg and it bottomed out,'' he said.
The mother of all fish was caught by Tasmanian tourist Claire Mathias and the fight to bring the barra on board took 25 minutes.
"Claire didn't think she could keep going -- it didn't fit in the landing net,'' Mr Le Brun said.
He and Allan Beale lifted the fish on to the boat for a quick hug, a few snaps and then spent 40minutes carefully reviving her for release.
"It's the biggest fish I've helped to catch,'' Mr Le Brun said.
