The Run-Off Barramundi Fishing season brings fishermen to Shady Camp looking for fighting, metre-plus barramundi.

The famous Shady Camp is located approx 200km from Darwin and takes around 2 hours travelling by road when towing a boat.
Approx 1 hour 40 minutes by car (4WD only during the wet).
The Shady Camp barrage saltwater boat ramp provides access to the Mary River from 1st Feb to 31 Sept each year. During the Wet Season Barra Run-Off period (Feb-April) the man made rock bar/cement barrages, holds back huge currents of freshwater which assists greatly when boats are launched downstream of the barrage to access the lower tidal reaches and coast.
Great Barramundi fishing is had below the barrage by all keen fisho's. Darwin's Barra Base guides complete Barramundi Fishing for our clients on these upper reaches of Sampan Creek during the higher spring tides where large qualities of Barra are swimming up with the tide to feed on bait coming down with the freshwater run off.
The better barra fishing is had during the run out of the tide by trolling the steep ragged mud banks sides or where known rugged rapid like creek bottom holds big barramundi waiting in creaves and ledges to ambush passing mullet/bait or lures.
Since 2005 many large metre-plus Barra have been landed in this upper stretch of Sampan Creek, from large keepers in 80 and 90's to our largest 130cm landed in 2006. 2009 Barra Run off a 105cm Barra was landed by Ian Skiller. Another great return booking fisho now in Darwin's Barra Base Metre Club.
